CATCHING THE
Designing a modern classic for a young family
required thinking outside the box.
Solar orientation, one of the pillars of passive
design, is predicated on large, north-facing
openings enabling the low winter sun to
penetrate and warm the house interior. The
higher summer sun is excluded by overhangs
such as deep eaves or a patio.
Orientation on the traditional Australian ‘three-
box’ layout – front garden / house / backyard –
is easily achieved where the rear of a property
faces north. But what about those sites with
less than optimal orientation?
