designmag Vol 2 - page 4

“They say time changes things,” said the controversial artist Andy Warhol,“but you
actually have to change them yourself.”
Change is certainly a constant of business life, and the building industry is no exception.
The greatest challenge for this industry, and the broader community, is sustainability.
It’s a term that is bandied about quite a lot but what does sustainability actually mean?
A simple definition is “the capacity to endure.”That encompasses the responsible use of
resources, preservation of diversity, and recognising the consequences of economic
activity.
Brickworks Building Products, one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of building
materials and the publisher of
design
mag, is no more immune to this challenge than
any other company or, indeed, individual.
Over the past decade, we have made substantial investments to address the
sustainability challenge. Sometimes this is in new technology,Austral Bricks’Wollert (Vic)
super-plants being an instance. These state-of-the art facilities use one-third less natural
gas than a comparable conventional kiln. Overall, new technology has enabled
Brickworks Building Products to slash its total greenhouse gas emissions by a remarkable
30 percent since 2000.
We are also designing new products and re-engineering many of our existing products
and their manufacturing processes to reduce their environmental impact.
Change is all around us and these are just a sample of the many steps we are taking to
ensure our future, as a company, as an industry and as a community.
