Spain has long been known for the quality
of its ceramic building products, especially
floor and wall tiles and roof tiles. Partly this
was an accident of history: European tile
making spread across the Mediterranean
from ancient Greece. And partly it can be
attributed to Spain’s lack of timber
necessitating the development of
alternative building technologies.
Bristile Roofing, as well as being one of our
foremost roof tile manufacturers, is the
exclusive Australian distributor of the
premium-quality terracotta roof tiles made by
one of Spain’s largest manufacturers,
Ceramica La Escandella.
At its production facilities in the Mediterranean
port city of Alicante – the pristine beaches of
the Costa Blanca line the coast of Alicante
province – the company manufactures over
400,000 tonnes of tiles per year, supplying
almost a quarter of the domestic market.
The export market for La Escandella roof tiles is
even more impressive with product sold into
60 countries on five continents. Much of this is
directed into conventional housing but La
Escandella roof tiles have been specified in a
number of high profile, large-scale
developments including the Riffa Views estates
in Bahrain and the King Abdullah University of
Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.
However the largest and highest-profile La
Escandella project thus far is Palm Island in
Dubai, a series of artificial archipelagos in the
shape of palm trees. These amazing feats of
engineering are readily visible from space. La
Escandella was selected to be the main
