The owners with input from Nextspace Architects
The owners of this late Victorian cottage in a high-value Sydney suburb chose to extend rather than rebuild. The original building was sympathetically renovated and repurposed with four kids’ bedrooms, bathroom and a living area.
An extension to the rear was demolished and a new two-level extension built around a substantial exposed steel frame, largely in the old footprint. The upper level is the parents’ suite while below is an open plan kitchen, dining and living area, opening onto a large deck.
The lower level is largely clad in rendered brickwork, with Terraçade terracotta facade tiles on the upper level. The owners looked at other lightweight systems but “we were impressed by the low maintenance requirements, finish and insulation qualities of Terraçade,” they said, adding that the installation was “a very quick and smooth process.”
The house was a category winner in the 2012 Master Builder Association NSW Excellence in Housing Awards.
Standard concrete masonry units are the workhorse of the building industry, acknowledged by architects, specifiers, builders, engineers and blocklayers for their strength, durability and cost-effectiveness in a wide range of applications.
Purpose Made Commons combine the durability, strength and consistency of premium-quality clay bricks with the construction efficiencies you demand. Designed for today’s building and design environment, they are strong, easy to handle and available in many different sizes.
