BEACH HOUSE IS A REAL GEM
Mornington, on Melbourne’s Port Phillip Bay, is a “sea change” region that attracts retirees who may eventually require specialist care. The Mornington Centre is a short-stay, geriatric evaluation and maintenance (GEM) facility.
The prominent architectural firm Lyons proposed a building looking more like a beach house than a hospital. Timber wasn’t feasible but Corbett Lyon recalled receiving a pattern-embossed brick from architectural academic Dr Derham Groves. “We thought let’s do a brick building but make it look like timber.”
Austral Bricks was invited to join a team which developed the idea into a hardwood flooring analogy comprising three “planks”, each of two brick colours, one plain and one embossed, laid such that the ends line up randomly, like finger jointing. Despite being just two millimetres wide, the embossed concentric circles are sharply resolved
Corbett Lyon described Austral Bricks as “an innovative partner” and praised the bricklayers, saying “they did a great job, they’re a great little team.”
In a homogeneous world, it’s refreshing to find a truly authentic product. The rich, earthy colours of Nubrik Classic230 pressed bricks are as natural as the minerals they are made from. These solid, honest bricks exude quality and will maintain their appeal and durability for generations.
Colours: Parchment, Cream, Mid-Coffee, Full-strength Coffee and Manganese
