“A MAGICAL SITE, ONE IN A MILLION”
Timber features prominently in this award-winning landmark complex of 557 apartments in inner-Melbourne. The most striking timber application is the procession of massive Karri posts that line both sides of Acacia Place, the main internal street/walkway which links Victoria Street to the Yarra River and carries cafes, restaurants and commercial tenancies. The posts range from three to nine metres long, each 450mm by 150mm in section.
“They accentuate the facade so that it feels grand,” says the project architect Kylie Caruana. “We found that Karri was the best timber species for its strength and colouring.” Karri is one of the few timbers available in the extreme sections and lengths required for this application.
It was sustainably harvested in Western Australia, processed by Auswest Timbers and supplied by Brittons Timbers. The posts have been left to grey naturally with time. “It’s a pretty magical site,” enthuses Kylie Caruana, “one in a million in Melbourne.”
