Sam the Paving Man
Once the Eveleigh Locomotive Workshops, this inner-Sydney site is now the Australian Technology Park, a high-tech precinct housing, among others, Channel 7, Pacific Magazines and Global Television.
The principal frontage of the television studio building is to Central Avenue, with service/loading access from Locomotive Street. At the eastern end of the complex a central plaza forms a gateway for the 3500 users of this building, many of whom arrive from nearby Redfern railway station.
The plaza design embraces the Locomotive Workshops brickwork heritage and continues the paving pattern of the Henderson Road entry. The plaza, paved in Bowral Silver Sand and Chestnut dry-pressed clay pavers, links the Locomotive Street and the Central Avenue levels via a sequence of broad, brick-paved stair flights.
The plaza fulfils and completes the original masterplan design and serves as the new outdoor gathering place in the heart of the Australian Technology Park.
